Tanda of November 2025: Juan Bautista Guido instrumental tango tanda

Welcome to the special tanda for November. As you might remember, in September we featured Osvaldo Pugliese, and in October, Juan D’Arienzo. This month, I’m bringing you a surprise name: Juan Bautista Guido.

In my view, Guido holds a special place among the guardia vieja (old stream) tango orchestras — alongside figures like Juan Maglio (who might appear in next month’s tanda!). Born in 1898, Guido began playing the bandoneón at a young age under the guidance of masters such as Arturo Severino. Over the years, he performed in a wide range of settings — from small ensembles to the orchestras of greats like Roberto Firpo.

The peak of his career came between 1927 and 1930, when he recorded around 80 tangos for the Victor label. Guido was known not only for his tango compositions but also for his interpretations of valses criollos. Unfortunately, due to health problems, he had to slow down after the 1930s, yet continued to perform on radio and in tours until his passing on October 5, 1945. Despite a relatively brief career, his artistry earned him lasting respect among the bandoneón masters of his era.
