2026-17 Juan D’Arienzo tango tanda with Juan Carlos Lamas

By 1942, Juan D’Arienzo had long secured his place as one of tango’s most commanding forces. The explosive energy of his mid-1930s revival — the years that earned him the title El Rey del Compás — had settled into something more assured, more deliberate. The departure of pianist Rodolfo Biagi in 1939 marked the end of one chapter, but D’Arienzo did not soften; he refined. The orchestra of the early 1940s retained its rhythmic drive and sharp attack, while gaining a darker, more complex emotional palette.
