Hi there. For the 40th tanda of 2025, I focused on milongas that Francisco Canaro released between 1935 and 1938. Honestly, I think Canaro is at the top when it comes to milonga—especially with vals.
He recorded 14 milongas during these years. Each one stands out in its own way, and I think you could play any of them at a milonga and get people moving. They’re just that good.
Here they are, in the order they were released:
Largá las penas | Roberto Maida | 1935-06-11 |
Silueta porteña | Roberto Maida | 1936-07-17 |
Milonga criolla | Roberto Maida | 1936-10-06 |
Milonga de mis amores | instrumental | 1937-05-26 |
La puñalada | instrumental | 1937-06-12 |
Milonga triste | Roberto Maida | 1937-08-10 |
Milonga de antaño | instrumental | 1937-08-19 |
Milonga del corazón | Roberto Maida | 1938-03-03 |
Historia sentimental | instrumental | 1938-04-21 |
Milonga del corazón | Ada Falcón | 1938-05-23 |
La milonga de mis tiempos | instrumental | 1938-05-23 |
Milonga brava | Roberto Maida | 1938-06-20 |
Reliquias porteñas | instrumental | 1938-07-14 |
Mi Buenos Aires | instrumental | 1938-10-17 |
Sure, you can mix and match these milongas based on who’s on the dance floor. But today, I want to share my favorite sequence—the one I always look forward to hearing and dancing to.
