2026-11 Rafael Canaro tango tanda with Luis Scalón & Raúl Sander

So far, we’ve explored orchestras rooted deeply in the Río de la Plata. For the 11th week of 2026, we’re shifting our focus to a different narrative: the story of a Uruguayan bandleader who became a cornerstone of tango in Europe, Rafael Canaro.

Born in 1890, Rafael Canaro was the younger brother of Francisco Canaro, one of the most influential figures in tango history. To avoid confusion, I will refer to him throughout by his full name. Although he is often mentioned in connection with his brother, Rafael Canaro deserves attention in his own right, especially for his role in the European tango scene.

In 1925, Rafael Canaro traveled to Paris, where he joined his brother’s orchestra as a double bass player. After a tour in New York in 1926, he returned to France, where he formed his own orchestra. From that point on, Rafael Canaro led his ensemble independently, performing and recording across Europe until 1939 and making a lasting contribution to the spread and acceptance of tango on the continent.
