In this week’s tanda, I’ve selected tangos recorded by Aníbal Troilo with the warm and expressive voice of Alberto Marino. Back in week 32, I featured Troilo’s instrumental tangos from 1941; this time, I wanted to slow the pace a little and shift the mood — from the energetic sound of Francisco Fiorentino to the deeply romantic tone of Marino.
Between 1943 and 1946, Troilo and Marino recorded 8 milongas, 3 valses, and 41 tangos — at least thirty of which could easily shine at any milonga today. Many of these songs were among the most beloved tangos of their time, also recorded by orchestras such as Miguel Caló and Lucio Demare. That’s why I’ve chosen pieces where Troilo’s musical imprint feels especially strong and unmistakable.
